What is the definition of coaching?
Before I began working with a life coach, I had spent many years working with different kinds of psychotherapists. So one of the first questions I had is: what is the definition of coaching?
I've found that the simplest way to explain coaching (vs counseling) is the direction that we look at. Counselors and psychotherapists, from my experience, typically, look to the past to find deeper causes for emotional disturbances and seek to answer the question: Why is my life this way? By contrast, coaches recognize that the past is significant to the individual, but instead turn the client towards the future and seek to answer the question: What can my life be?
The International Coaches Federation distinguishes Coaching from Psychotherapy much more clearly in this way:

By contrast, coaches recognize that the past is significant to the individual, but instead turn the client towards the future and seek to answer the question: What can my life be?
The International Coaches Federation distinguishes Coaching from Psychotherapy much more clearly in this way:
The Nature and Scope of Coaching
Part I: With Respect to Psychotherapy
WHO THE CLIENT IS
The individual coaching client is someone who wants to reach one or more of the following: a higher level of performance, learning, or satisfaction. The client is not seeking emotional healing or relief from psychological pain.
The coaching client can take action to move towards a goal with the support of the coach. The successful client is not excessively limited in the ability to take action or overly hesitant to make this kind of progress.
THE RELATIONSHIP IN COACHING
A coach relates to the client as a partner. A coach does not relate to the client from a position of an expert, authority, or healer. Coach and client together choose the focus, format, and desired outcomes for their work. The client does not relinquish the responsibility for creating and maintaining these nor
does the coach take full responsibility for them.
RESULTS
Coaching is designed to help clients improve their learning and performance, and
enhance their quality of life. Coaching does not focus directly on relieving psychological pain or treating cognitive or emotional disorders.
TIME FRAMES
Coaching concentrates primarily on the present and future. Coaching does not focus on
the past or on the past's impact on the present. Coaching uses information from the client's past to clarify where the client is today. It does not depend on resolution of the past to move the client forward.
EMOTIONS
Coaching assumes the presence of emotional reactions to life events and that clients are capable of expressing and handling their emotions. Coaching is not psychotherapy and emotional healing is not the focus of coaching.
RELATIONSHIP TO PSYCHOTHERAPY
Coaching can be used concurrently with psychotherapeutic work. It is not used as a
substitute for psychotherapeutic work.
ADVICE
Advice, opinions, or suggestions are occasionally offered in coaching. Both parties
understand that the client is free to accept or decline what is offered and takes the
ultimate responsibility for action. The coach is not discouraged from offering advice, opinions or suggestions on occasion.
REQUESTING
A coach makes a request of the client to promote action toward the client's desired
outcome. A coach does not make such requests in order to fix the client's problem or
understand the client's past.
Part II: With Respect to Consulting
Definition: In all of the following statements, the word 'client' is used to denote the person who is being coached, regardless of who is paying for the service.
EXPERTISE
Coaches are experts in the coaching process and may not have specific knowledge of a
given subject area or industry. Where coaches have expertise in other areas, they may use it to facilitate the coaching process. Coaches do not use this particular expertise to diagnose, direct, or design solutions for the client.
RELATIONSHIP
Relationship is the foundation of coaching. The coach and client intentionally develop a relationship which is characterized by a growing and mutual appreciation and respect for each other as individuals. This relationship is not an adjunct to or byproduct of the coaching. Nor is it based on the client's position or performance.
USE OF INFORMATION
In coaching, information drawn from the client is used by the coach to promote the
client's awareness and choice of action. This information is not used to evaluate
performance or produce reports for anyone but the person being coached.
SCOPE
Coaching has the freedom and flexibility to address a wide variety of personal and
professional topics. In any given coaching relationship, coach and client alone determine the scope of their work. Coaching is not necessarily restricted to a narrowly defined issue nor is its scope determined in any other way.
CONTRIBUTION TO RESULTS
In coaching, any contribution the coach makes to producing the client's desired outcome is through on-going interaction with the client. The coach's role does not include producing a contracted product or result outside of the coaching sessions.
ONGOING IMPACT
Coaching is designed to provide clients with a greater capacity to produce results and a greater confidence in their ability to do so. It is intended that clients do not leave coaching with a perception that they need to rely on a coach in order to produce similar results in the future.
Do you like glass art?
The other day I was having a coffee at my favorite coffee shop, and I absolutely fell in love with glass art that I saw there. Sundance Java Bar promotes local artists by allowing them to display their art -- I noticed that this has become quite the common practice these days. And am I ever happy they do!
A number of Cherie Dobbie's glass-work is on display there, and I can't think of anything (besides the great Italian artists) that has ever captured my imagination and creativity as Cherie's work. Truly, I believe her work is inspired by some divine spirit. It is some of the most beautiful work have ever seen.
I felt so inspired to share her work with everyone I know or can reach because I felt this art is something really special.
Have a look at her gallery, and let me know what you think! Or contact Cherie directly at:

Meaningful Media of the Day
I have heard his name for years, but it wasn't until recently that I saw the incredible message he has to share.
I recently purchased Anthony Robbins' Power Talk, an incredible series of audio sessions. In one session Tony interviews Dr. Deepak Chopra.
What Dr. Chopra has to say has had an incredible impact on my perceptions of reality, and as a consequence, my own internal peace.
Here is a video that is similar in content to the Power Talk interview.
Dr. Chopra has all kinds of books, audios and videos out on the market. The best deal I know of at the moment is through Nigthingale-Conant. They are offering this incredible deal:
For only $1, you can try out Magical Mind, Magical Body by Dr. Deepak Chopra for 30 days.
If that doesn't appeal, check out any of the materials Dr. Chopra has, including this bestseller:
Or if you're at all interested in learning more about what Debbie Ford has to say, check out this bestseller:

The first mistake you are making: You don't invest in yourself.
Nobody has infinite resources.
You only have 24 hours in a day.
You have limited money.
And you only have so much energy to give.
So, you need to choose how you invest these resources wisely.
But what winds up happening for most people (me included!) is that you make poor choices about what you invest your time, money and energy in. If you are like most caring people you will often put other people's needs before your own. I write this article mainly with women in mind because generally speaking women tend to do this more often than men. I'm a bit of an oddball (or just rare :) the last three events I went to had 5 men in a group of 30, and 4 men in a group of 20) as a man, because I also think this way.
As caring and nurturing individuals, we will typically put others needs before our own. So we will invest in others before we invest in ourselves. We do things for others. We buy things for others. We sacrifice ourselves for others.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with this -- the world needs more of us! -- but there is a cost to everything. And the cost here is that if you give everything to others, there will be nothing left for you.
Why is it important to understand this concept?
Do you own a car? What happens if you never maintain it? Do you have plants? What happens if you never water or feed them? Do you have friends? What happens to your relationship if you never spend time with them?
In a phrase: they will die.
You, as well, are a machine of sorts -- a beautiful, complicated, magical machine. Like any machine or plant or relationship, you need to maintain yourself, or you will die (both physically and spiritually).
You need to fuel yourself with nutritious things: eat healthy foods, feed your mind with education, tend to your soul with spiritual activities, and maintain your wealth by managing your finances. In other words, you need to invest in your own wellness.
As you can see, there are many aspects to your wellness. Intellectual, Spiritual, Social, Physical, Occupational... And in order to maintain your wellness, you will need to consider investing in the activities that will promote wellness in each of them.
What will you do to invest your time in your Intellect? Will you read more? Will you watch meaningful movies? Will you take a course?
How will you invest your energy in you Body? Will you engage in a home exercise program? Will you join an exercise class? Will you go for walks or hikes? Will you learn to eat nutritious foods?
In what way will you invest your money? Will you hire a professional to help with your financial or emotional needs? Will you invest in training programs? Will you take a relaxing vacation or go to a spa?
There are so many thing that you can do to invest in yourself. Not all of them require money.
So I challenge you: research and brainstorm and write out the results to this question:
What can I do that is free, low cost, medium cost and more expensive in each of the areas of my wellness?
The challenge that you will probably face is the voice in your mind that questions whether or not you are really worth the investment. Should I spend $500 on coaching? Should I spend $100 per month on personal training? Can I really afford to spend a $1000 on a spa get away? Can I really take a day just for myself? Do I really have the energy to read a self-help book after my long, hard week?
I totally get that resistance. But what's really scary is what happens if you don't make those investments.
Even if you don't now, odds are that:
You will wind up hating your job.
You will become bored with your life.
And you will be unhappy with yourself and the world.
Don't wait until it's too late -- when the car doesn't start any more -- prevent the problem: start maintaining yourself now.

Money and Time Freedom For All
I had a flash of insight the other day... In the past year I have had much money and time freedom. In the past 5 years I saved a lot, and because of work stress I was required to take medical leave, and therefore received medical disability benefits.
What I realized is that in this past year I have been able to be more, do more and have more than I have ever wanted or dreamed possible! I have spent the past year volunteering, speaking publicly, and generally contributing when and where I felt I could -- and more importantly in places and situations that didn't stress me out.
Having money and time freedom has allowed me to be 'me' to my fullest.
In the past year I have developed a dream to answer the question: how can we, as a world, create money and time freedom for everybody in the world?
Before you start jumping to conclusions or relating the idea to other things that have been tried in the past (don't worry, I know you will, and it's perfectly natural :) .. just stick with me for a few minutes!), let's hold this idea on its own.. and see what the possibilities are...
Everybody's definition of money and time freedom is different. What I need to be financially free is different from what you need to be financially free. And that's ok. As well, what I'm willing to do for financial freedom is different from what you're willing to do. And that's ok too.
But can we all agree that we all need: food, water and housing? Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs define a few other things we need, but those 3 are the ones that will most directly translate to money.
My idea is: let us create money and time freedom for all by working together to create a pool of capital, and from the interest earned on that capital we pay the individuals of our group the money they need to survive!
For example, let us work together as a group of 10 people to create $10 million. At 10% interest per year, we as a group can receive incomes of $100,000 per year. I'm not particularly interested in the details of how this would work, but I believe that it is completely possible.
One suggestion I have is to begin with this goal:
At the end of six months we will have $1million, and we then give the most needy the interest payments to get them to financial freedom, so they can more fully commit to work on generating the next 9 million.
Over a period of time, we build the $10 million in capital and we can all take our "equal share" of interest.
Where does the money come from? Let's look at some basic math:
$1 million = 100,000 purchases @ $10
$1 million = 10,000 purchases @ $100
$1 million = 1,000 purchases @ $1000
In a network of 10 people, do you think we have access in our personal networks to 10,000 people? Maybe you know 100 other people -- do those people know 10 other people each?
What do we sell? Well maybe you are an accountant and you are having trouble finding clients. I am a life coach and I am looking for clients. I have clients who need accounting services. You have clients who need coaching services. So let's exchange clients.
Where does the money go? I suggest a mutually agreed-upon Trust. We can locate a financial organization to manage it.
How do we determine the most needy? I suggest a 3rd party accountant or financial planner -- we task them with collecting our personal financial situations and they choose who gets the interest payments first.
Who get's the capital? For this to work, we need to invest the money for a period of time. Perhaps we have a contract that states the money must be invested for 5 years -- after that time the team member may withdraw his 10%.
The foundation of this idea is not money, however. The foundation is money and time freedom for all. It involves completely different definitions of trust, community, partnership, abundance... and, I believe it is a true vision.
For, after we have 10 people who are money and time free, those 10 can form new groups of 10, and replicate the process.
At its limit -- when the system has reached every person in the world -- I believe we will have seen a complete re-distribution of the world's wealth. I also believe that as our definitions of trust, community and abundance are shifted, we will come to have completely different definitions of money and time freedom.
I don't know, it's just an idea I'm playing with :) You want to play with me?

How to Calculate Hourly Pay: Rates for Career Coaches
A great article for new coaches like me :)

Dear C.J.,
I’m getting started as a coach and wanted to get your thoughts on how much to charge for my clients? Do you have any thoughts based on your experience?
Samuel
Samuel,
I discovered with my coaching practice that setting pricing is essentially no different than setting a value for your perceived self-worth. The biggest mistakes I see are that folks undervalue themselves when they start off.
As a starting coach, I was a bit insecure and wasn’t sure I could command even the lowest range that was being offered ($75/ hour) to coaches. I didn’t have any coaching experience, and in my mind, I couldn’t justifiably charge the same as another practicing coach. What I discounted was that I had a ton of life experience and experience working as a life coach and that does make a difference.....

What an inspiring weekend at Accomplishment Coaching
To boldly go where no man has gone before...
That is my mission.
At the Accomplishment Coaching Coach Training Program this weekend in Seattle, I was challenged to commit to the Big 'D' Dave. To shift from taking a Dr. Spok approach to life and take on a Captain Kirk persona. And I have committed to it.
What the heck does that mean? In this, my first training session, the Master Coach (Christopher McAuliffe, MCC), lead trainers and training program participants observed that there is something more to me that I am holding back. Christopher also challenged me to take on a more active approach to life -- just get out there and get things done -- (i.e. like Captain Kirk) because, as he observed I have taken an analytical, paralysis by analysis approach to life, which has left me focusing on details and I'm not getting anywhere with it (i.e.a Dr. Spok approach).
I have begun already -- I am committed to follow my gut, listen to my intuition, and see where that takes me.
It's going to be a big challenge for me, and I'm scared. But I now have the support of an amazing team of coaches and leaders to help me fulfill my dreams and my ultimate potential. This is going to be a BIG year friends.
To infinity and B E Y O N D!

Another great article from Seth Godin
The stability, power and longevity of a tribe is directly related to the way it is treated by its members.
When many of them seek to take, to enrich themselves and to find a loophole or advantage, the group is weakened.
Culture and management are not the same thing--when we strengthen our organization, when we encourage and respect our fellow employees, management follows. Group up, not top down.
Society and government are not the same thing either. The tribe we get is the tribe we build.
I don't think we can abdicate our responsibilities within a tribe to the leader.
The opportunity is simple: the more each individual gives, the more each of us end up getting.
I set up a new blog: How to Lose Tummy Fat Product Reviews
I'm kind of tired of hearing about all these different pills and techniques to lose fat -- I'd like to know once and for all what exercises or products actually help promote good health.
A fat stomach and high body fat percentages, I believe, are a result of poor nutrition and exercise.
However, I leave myself open to possibility.
This new site reviews what products work and which don't. If you've had any experience with any of the products listed, please leave a comment!

Have a nasty LinkedIn Profile Link? Here's to fix it!
Wow, I'm on a roll today! I also figured out how to fix my nasty LinkedIn profile url.
It used to be: http://www.linkedin.com/pub/dave-brown/10/530/5b6
I managed to change it to: http://ca.linkedin.com/in/bestcoaching/
Here's how I did it.
1. Log in to your LinkedIn account.
2. From the Profile menu, choose Edit Profile.
3. In the details about your profile is a section called "Public Profile". Beside it is a URL to your profile.. and beside that is an Edit link -- click the edit link.
4. You should now see this page:
5. On the right hand side is a section called "Your public profile URL". There is a link there called "Customize your public profile url" -- click that.
6. Enter your desired URL -- LinkedIn will automatically verify the link.
7. Once you've got the URL you like, click Set Custom URL.

Have a nasty facebook link? Here's how to fix it.
For months now I've been using this as a link to my Facebook profile: http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000145504915
Finally I found a simple article which showed me how to change it to: http://www.facebook.com/lifecoachdavebrown
The article, http://www.facebook.com/note.php?note_id=433331867755, gives the following steps:
It certainly helped me -- hope it helps you too!

How to give your Facebook profile or fan page a user-friendly URL.
1. Find Account Settings under the Account tab
2. The second setting under this menu is User Name. Click this tab.
3. Facebook will prompt you with “Choose your new username carefully. You can only change your username once”. Keep simplicity in mind.
4. Check the availability of that name. If all is copacetic you will have yourself a friendly URL.
If that doesn’t lead you to help change your fan page, simple go to http://www.facebook.com/username/. You will be directed to a drop down menu where you can choose which page you’d like to edit. Keep simplicity in mind and check the availability of that name. Again, if all is copacetic you will have yourself a friendly URL!

Wrangling DNS forwarding watcha-ma-call-its
OK, so a few months ago I thought I'd be smart and choose a nifty domain name. Then I went and set it up, and I thought all was good. Now I just figured out I did it wrong, so all of my articles, etc, have been linked to the blogspot domain of mysearchformeaning2009.blogspot.com, instead of www.dontdoubtdave.com
AND, a bunch of my emails were getting filtered by google when I naively agreed to allow my dave@dontdoubtdave.com address forward through gmail.
woops! Sorry Robert G. Allen -- all of your cool and useful emails weren't getting to me because google thinks your stuff is spam :)
OK, so FYI, for anyone who wants to use their own domain name for their google blog, read the google instructions carefully -- but beware there's a couple little catches.
I used enom (http://www.enom.com/Default.aspx?) as my domain name registrar. I believe google recommended it to me, but their help docs don't explain very well how to setup the enom host record. As well, the help instructions on enom appear to call different columns by different names than are shown... a little confusing, non?
Here are the settings that I am using to get things working properly now.
I added "blog" to the host name field. This sets up the blog.dontdoubtdave.com domain.
I'm forwarding www.dontdoubtdave.com to my web page provider -- not sure how to get this to work seamlessly yet -- I'm doing a url redirect... the result is that in your browser address bar you will see: www3.telus.net/dontdoubtdave/, and not www.dontdoubtdave.com as I would like it to be set it up. But I'm not sure what record type to use (if I choose CNAME and enter www3.telus.net/dontdoubtdave/ in address, I get an error)
So once the domain is set up, you then go into your blogger settings and follow the google instructions --which work well from this point. http://www.google.com/support/blogger/bin/static.py?page=ts.cs&ts=1233381
I also got my email forwarding working properly now, but, oddly, using the email forwarding section -- there's a select box that has to be set so you can get into the email forwarding settings.
OK, I hope that will help anyone else having trouble with their domains.

Going to sign up with Jason the "Fitman" Hart
I've been fairly active over the years, but I've been losing motivation. So I've been looking for a new approach to fitness. I recently met Jason Hart, and I love his energy and attitude. So I'm going to give his program a shot. If you're in Campbell River, BC, check out his site:

Nothing is at last sacred but the integrity of your own mind. If we follow the truth, it will bring us out safe at last. - Ralph Waldo Emerson
When did you feel most alive recently? Where were you? What did you smell? What sights and sounds did you experience? Capture that moment on paper and recall that feeling. Then, when it’s time to create something, read your own words to reclaim a sense of being to motivate you to complete a task at hand.

In the past six months I have felt more alive than I have in the past decade. This, for me, is the proof that I am on the right path to generating the future that I want.

Are you an ESL Speaker or Immigrant to the West?
I lived in China for 3 years (2002 to 2005), and I have been with my mainland Chinese wife for 10 years. I understand the problems you have as an immigrant. I also understand deeply Asian and Western relationships.
Are you confused or do you find it difficult working with Westerners? Maybe I can help you.
I invite you to write a comment here.. or write me an email dave@dontdoubtdave.com

Does anyone have any opinions about Nuskin AgeLOC products?
I responded to a craigslist ad calling for Wellness Coaches, and it looks like I'm being asked to become a product rep. for Nuskin AgeLOC Vitality at http://www.vitalityoverview.com/
Does anyone have any experiences with this product? I'm a little confused as to why they were advertising for "Wellness Coaches". Is anyone a Wellness Coach for this AgeLOC Program?
